In an interview with NBC News, Gerard Varlotta, director of sports rehabilitation at the Rusk Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine at New York University Medical Center, explained why the findings make sense.

“There needs to be an equal distribution of pressure,” he said. “Too firm of a mattress is not good. It doesn’t provide enough contour to our bodies. Too soft is going to bend and cause problems as well.”
