3 Ways To Tell If Your Bed Is Causing Back Pain (& Why You Need A Sleep Natural Bed)

How to Tell if Your Bed is Causing Back Pain

While it’s hard to know exactly what the reason for your pain is, here are some signs you may need a new mattress:

The pain is there first thing in the morning. If you go to bed feeling great and wake up miserable, it’s a good sign your mattress is causing back pain. A mattress that’s too soft will cause your spine to fall out of alignment all night long, and a mattress that’s too firm will cause joint pressure in your hips that leads to pain in your lower back. You’re certain to feel this pain as soon as you try to get out of bed.

You’re tossing and turning all night. It’s hard to get comfortable when you’re, well, uncomfortable. If your spine isn’t neutral on your bed, you’ll try all night to find a better sleep position when the problem is actually your mattress.

Your mattress is at least eight years old. As mattresses age, they lose their shape. A memory foam mattress will stop being able to cradle your shoulders and hips as it should, and an innerspring mattress will start to sag. An old mattress and back pain go hand in hand.

How the Right Mattress Can Cure Your Back Pain

Now that we’ve discussed how to tell if your mattress is causing back pain, we’ve found some advice on how to choose a bed that will relieve AND prevent back pain. Researchers in Spain recently studied people with long-term back pain and found that people who slept on a medium-to-firm mattress (5.6 on a firmness scale) had less pain than those who prefer a soft or firm mattress. In an interview with NBC News, Gerard Varlotta, director of sports rehabilitation at the Rusk Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine at New York University Medical Center, explained why the findings make sense.

“There needs to be an equal distribution of pressure,” he said. “Too firm of a mattress is not good. It doesn’t provide enough contour to our bodies. Too soft is going to bend and cause problems as well.”

But of all the medium-to-firm beds out there, it’s hard to tell which brands and models are best. One thing to look for is a material that’s been proven to help back-pain sufferers sleep.

Sleep expert Michael Breus, PhD, says latex is a great choice. In WebMD’s article “How to Pick Your Perfect Mattress”, he says, “Quite frankly, I think one of the best materials is latex.” Breus goes on to say that latex is firm and supportive, yet provides comfort similar to memory foam. But latex pushes back whereas memory foam doesn’t, ultimately providing more support.
